We finally have an end in sight for salons to reopen after Lockdown 3.0 (Woop-Woop)!
We have only a few weeks to go, and looking ahead to April 12th, we have put together a guide about PPE needed for salon reopening!
Undoubtedly, one of the biggest industry concerns surrounding salon re-opening is the safety of clients, staff and ourselves! But, providing your salon has the appropriate and necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) you can help to prevent the spread of Covid-19, we can all feel safe, relaxed and begin to adjust back to normal life!
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is equipment that will protect you from health and safety risks. It can include items such as gloves, eye protection, aprons etc. We are all well aware of face-masks by now and the laws surrounding them.
Hairdressers, barbers and beauty salons that are in close proximity with clients for extensive periods, (meaning it’s difficult to maintain social distancing measures) need to wear further protection in addition to the standard.
The new BEIS guidelines recommend that our industry wear Type II face coverings (a medical face mask made up of a protective 3-ply construction that prevents large particles from reaching the client or working surfaces) as well as a well-fitted clear visor that covers the forehead, extends below the chin and wraps around the side of the face.
It is also recommended you wear the following PPE:
Continuing on from previous lockdown advice, reception areas should be fitted with a screen. These should also be used in nail bars to form protection for nail technicians and clients when giving manicures.
For up-to-date info, the guidance for people who provide close contact services should be referred to regularly.
HairCo and Beauty stock a range of PPE including: face masks, gloves, visors, and disposable gowns etc. The demand for such stock is going to be larger than ever, so make sure you stock up early!
Government guidelines state that clients must wear a face mask in hair, nail, beauty salons and barbers unless exempt.
Furlough has been extended until the end of September 2021. Employees are currently receiving 80% of their wages through the scheme, however employers will soon have t contribute 10% in July and 20% in August and September. Many of those in the industry that are currently on furlough have concerns about job losses over summer.
The fourth grant will cover February to April, and is worth 80% of average trading profits up to £7,500. A fifth grant will be available from July covering the period May to September 2021. The amount allocated in the fifth grant will depend on: whether your turnover has fallen by more than 30%, in this case you will continue to receive the full 80%. However, if it is less than 30% your grant will be reduced to 30%. The scheme will be expanded to allow those who became self-employed in the 2019-2020 financial year to claim provided they filed a tax return by midnight last night.
From April 2021, the government is offering Restart Grants of up to £18,000 for individual businesses within the industry. The scheme will see £5bn across England and £794m in extra funding to Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
For those not eligible for restart grants, local authorities in England will get £425m to support businesses.
The 100% Business Rate Holiday initiative will end in June 2021, a discount of up to two thirds will follow for the rest of 2021.
Businesses in England that take on apprentices will receive double the usual incentive payments (£3000).
A UK-wide ‘Help to Grow’ scheme aimed to help small and medium-sized businesses across the UK learn new skills, reach new customers and boost profits will be introduced. This includes a 12-week management programme and free technology advice plus discounted software. Register now at gov.uk/helptogrow.
For two years, businesses will be able to reduce their tax bill by 25p for every pound they invest in new equipment under a ‘super-deduction’ scheme’.
Small and medium-sized hair and beauty salons in the UK will continue to be able to reclaim up to two weeks of eligible Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) costs per employee from the government.
Recovery loans of between £25,000 and £10m will be available with a government guarantee to lenders of 80%.

Who would miss such a great deal?
Top Tips:
Another way hair salons can generate revenue during lockdown is to focus on current clientele before starting to dream of a thousand of new online clients! Your value comes from the clients you have, so build and strengthen your relationships!
Make sure you are keeping in touch, updating them on all necessary info, and letting them know that you are still there for them despite being closed.
Offer them the VIP treatment! Ask if they would like 1 on 1 virtual classes to perfect a hair technique/style. I would personally LOVE to have a hairdresser teach me how to blow-dry my hair at home to some kind of hairdressing standard!
You could guide them through a simple root touch up if they really cannot wait until your return. This could save some serious colour corrections in the long run!
You can even just give advice! There are thousands of people online with hair concerns that you will have answers for! Use your knowledge, share it!
Create a weekly newsletter addressing all the ways your clients could need home care.
For example, you’ll have plenty of blondes that are turning brassy by now! Create a newsletter about maintaining blonde at home (until they can make it into the salon). If you need help getting started, read our blonde blog. Mention the products that you have available to help with each concern! Watch your retail sales soar!
Product suppliers are sure to be busy creating online content! You can use this content to boost your pages engagement and following! You can also collaborate with your suppliers and see if you can do guest pieces, or be affiliated with a giveaway on their page! Being linked directly to brands can help your online sales seriously take off!
If you’re reading this blog, chances are you’re already taking your business online!
Why not invest some time into levelling up your social media skills! We all know that a big following online means more interest in your physical salon! So prepare yourself for your reopening! Work on making interesting, sharable content that your following will find entertaining or educational! An engaged following will translate into a loyal following; this lovely lot will become valued VIP’s!
Just like a pamper pack, but guaranteed rolling orders!
They’re everywhere right now! So get involved!
Entice your current clients with a super deal on their first month and include great products that you know they’ll love; personalise each box to match their needs!
Offer a free mini consultation with an expert! No online order will have this level of customer care!
Clients will be so thrilled that you took the time to understand their hair concerns that they’ll come back time and time again!

There’s nothing worse than watching your creamy, cool blonde turn an unflattering yellow! But, why does this happen, and what can you do about it? We’ll answer all of your questions and make sure you know how to prevent brassy hair in the future!
If you’ve ever lightened your hair, you’ve probably experienced brassiness! It’s a common concern for blonde hair, but that’s not to say brunettes don’t experience brassiness too. Brassy tones occur when lightened hair starts to develop yellow or orange tones. We’ll be exploring how to avoid brassiness and keep your beautiful cool tones for longer!
So, why the hell does this happen I hear you ask! Well, there are many reasons for brassiness!
Unless you’re blessed with natural, milky white blonde hair or you carry the ashiest of ash tones, there’s a big chance you’ll have to put some effort into the brassy battle! Sadly, it’s just life! Warm undertones will fight against bleach and toner so you’ll need a solid plan to keep your cool!
Although sunbathing and taking a dip in the pool sounds like pure bliss, it will be causing your hair some brassy stress!
Do you know what’s inside the dox dye and home lightner??? NOR DO WE! The list of chemicals and crazy ingredients is too much for us to handle! That’s why we stay well away! The best products = the best results! Always use professional colour!
Who knew our beloved shower could be to blame for brassiness? Some areas have particularly hard water, meaning it has a high concentration of minerals. Hard water can wreak havoc on your beaming blonde, turning it bitter and brassy.
Shampoos that rely on sulfates to cleanse your hair are essential just stripping your locks of any natural oils! This will leave your hair extremely rough and dry! Think scarecrow! When your hair is in this condition, brassiness is almost guaranteed!
Leaving your hair to air dry is best right? Wrong! When your hair is left wet, the more the purple/blue molecule (the counteracting colour of yellow/orange) will be lost from the hair. Instead, dry your hair as soon as you get out of the shower. Of course, always use a heat protection spray! Alternatively, you can wrap your hair every so often if you are reducing heat styling.
Find sulphate free products! Remember we mentioned scarecrows, you don’t want that, nobody does! Sulphates and chemicals are used to make your products super foamy, this is what strips away your natural oils. There are plenty of sulphate-free products out there that double up as colour protection! We’re baffled as to why sulphate stuffed shampoo still exists! If only everybody knew the damage it causes! Spread the word HairCo huns!
Are you a level 5 and want work straight towards a 10? You’re asking for disaster! In theory you shouldn’t lighten your hair more than two shades from your natural colour, but of course we all like to push boundaries. But, don’t say we didn’t warn you!
Instead of an all over colour in a single session, you’ll need to gradually guide your hair lighter! Highlights are your friend! You have less chance of brassiness with multiple salon visits and gradually straying from your own natural shade. Talk to your colourist, they can best advise!
We all love a steamy shower, but NEWS FLASH, hot water is bad for your hair (and your skin while we’re handing out advice)! So, another tip on how to prevent brassy hair is to use cooler temperatures to help preserve your colour; that means keeping away brassiness!
Has your hair dresser ever asked you if you wanted a cold rinse at the end of your shampoo and you’ve looked at them in horror wondering why they’re offering such torture? Well, they’re trying to close your cuticle cells and lock in moisture! You should just say yes next time, and always incorporate this step at home. Closed cuticles look shinier, healthier and stronger!
It can be tempting to arrive on holiday and want to jump straight into the pool! But that chlorine will strip your hair faster than you can think of a pool side cocktail! So, how to prevent brassy hair on holiday? Read on…
Have you noticed there’s always a shower near a pool? There’s good reason, you should ALWAYS shower pre-pool! This non-chemical water will act as a protection barrier. You hair will soak up the chlorine-free water and therefore not be able to soak up further chemically damaging, brassy hair turning pool water. When exiting the pool, rinse again in the chlorine-free shower.
There are plenty of shampoos out there specifically made to counteract brassiness! Most are purple or blue in colour as these are opposites of yellow and orange on the colour wheel and therefore cancel out the brassy tones! Investing in a great purple shampoo is the easiest way to keep brass at bay!
Once again our industry has come to a halt due to another national lockdown, and although this news came as a blow, it is vital we stay safe and healthy at this time.
Like everybody in the UK, you may be feeling scared, stressed, fed up or even a little angry at the thought of having to stay home and isolate from your family and friends.
We’ve outlined some helpful tips to stay safe and well over the next few weeks.
Stating the obvious. Of course we all know that the best thing we can all do is stay home to help stop the spread of infection and to protect ourselves from becoming ill. If you’d like to read deeper into when you should and should not be leaving your home, there is lots of information here.
It can be easy to shut ourselves off and avoid depressing news and updates of Covid-19. However, there are many important updates that we all must be aware of. Even if you choose not to tune into the daily updates, stay in touch with a friend or check social media (reliable sources only) for important headlines such as new symptoms to look out for!
As you will have seen everywhere in the media, washing your hands is hugely important; wash regularly for 20 seconds in order to stay safe and healthy!
Along with frequent hand washing, we must keep up with sanitising our hands! We aren’t always able to be by a sink, but we are always capable of carrying a little bottle of santisier with us wherever we go!
On average, we touch our faces 20-30 times per hour! Between each touch, we are touching our phones, laptops, door handles and many more objects, all of which can be harbouring germs and bacterias. Sanitising frequently is a must to reduce the risk of transferring any virus causing nasties to yourself or to others!
See the vast range available to help protect you and your loved ones.
If and when you do need to leave your home, don’t forget your mask!
