Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and Salon Reopening

We finally have an end in sight for salons to reopen after Lockdown 3.0 (Woop-Woop)!

We have only a few weeks to go, and looking ahead to April 12th, we have put together a guide about PPE needed for salon reopening!

Undoubtedly, one of the biggest industry concerns surrounding salon re-opening is the safety of clients, staff and ourselves! But, providing your salon has the appropriate and necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) you can help to prevent the spread of Covid-19, we can all feel safe, relaxed and begin to adjust back to normal life!

What is PPE?

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is equipment that will protect you from health and safety risks. It can include items such as gloves, eye protection, aprons etc. We are all well aware of face-masks by now and the laws surrounding them.

What PPE do I need?

Hairdressers, barbers and beauty salons that are in close proximity with clients for extensive periods, (meaning it’s difficult to maintain social distancing measures) need to wear further protection in addition to the standard.

  • Wear a visor AND mask. You are advised to wear both a clear visor or goggles and a Type II face mask to keep clients safe. Your salon/(you, if you are a salon owner) should provide training on how to wear face masks safely.

The new BEIS guidelines recommend that our industry wear Type II face coverings  (a medical face mask made up of a protective 3-ply construction that prevents large particles from reaching the client or working surfaces) as well as a well-fitted clear visor that covers the forehead, extends below the chin and wraps around the side of the face.

It is also recommended you wear the following PPE:

  • Disposable gloves
  • Face masks
  • Goggles (visors as substitute)
  • Aprons

Continuing on from previous lockdown advice, reception areas should be fitted with a screen. These should also be used in nail bars to form protection for nail technicians and clients when giving manicures.

For up-to-date info, the guidance for people who provide close contact services should be referred to regularly.

Where can I buy PPE for the hair and beauty industry?

HairCo and Beauty stock a range of PPE including: face masks, gloves, visors, and disposable gowns etc. The demand for such stock is going to be larger than ever, so make sure you stock up early!

Should clients wear PPE?

Government guidelines state that clients must wear a face mask in hair, nail, beauty salons and barbers unless exempt.

Whether you’re single or taken, treating yourself is always a must, and we cannot think of a better time to do so!

It’s usually easy to treat yourself on Valentine’s Day; you can pop to get your nails done, have a spa day, get a blow-dry, the options are endless. This year is a little different, but don’t threat, there are plenty of ways to feel amazing and treat yourself on Valentines’ Day whilst in lockdown too!

1. Pamper yourself

Where to even begin with this one! Let’s start from the top, down!

HAIR! Get yourself a luxuriously rich hair mask and slather it on! Who doesn’t feel a million pounds when their hair is beautifully soft and healthy!

How about a V’Day colour upgrade? Is your hair looking a bit tired? Tone it! Or, how about adding a pop of semi-permanent pink? We are here for the results!! Tag us in any Valentine’s colour upgrades on social media!

Speaking of hair, how about the hair on your face… no we’re not talking about that tash!! BROWS! I don’t know about you but we are looking a little bushy and patchy! Why not treat yourself to a brow tidy up and a tint!

Where there’s brow tint there’s lash tint! Lengthen the look of those lashes as if by magic! We started tinting during lockdown 2.0 and we’re never going back!

We were going to talk wax, but let’s be honest, pampering and waxing isn’t a match! Save the pain for another day!

Next up! Face masks! Are you a mud person, a bubble babe, a sheet kinda gal? Whichever your favourite, treat your skin! We love to put a mask on whilst having a bubbly bath or while watching our favourite TV show! You do you! It’s your day!

If you’re lucky enough to live with a partner or friends, maybe if you ask nicely they will give you a foot massage and paint your toes! If not, you can do it yourself! Having a fresh, shiny coat of polish on our hands and feet can make you feel invincible! Shop everything you need to give yourself a Valentine’s Mani, Pedi HERE.

2. Do absolutely nothing!

There’s so much talk of doing so much, but how about just stop and relax! We all need to rest! Take a nap! Take a long bubbly bath! Scroll Instagram. Or take a walk! Maybe you relax by playing a game or doing a puzzle? Whatever it is that makes you happy, chilled and stress free.. DO IT! This is the ultimate treat!

3. Have a date with your fave celeb

Ok, so not literally, we can’t go out for a date with anybody right now, let alone Chris Hemsworth, but we can binge watch the films of our fave celebs! Get under a cosy blanket, make some popcorn and get some greats on!

If you’re not in lockdown with your partner or you want to share a movie day with friends, why not schedule to watch a film together! There are plenty of services offering ‘watch together’ features! This way you can chat and enjoy the movie as if you were together! Lockdown + long distance ain’t gonna to slow us down this V’DAY!

4. Indulge a little (or a lot)

Treat Yourself on Valentine’s Day with your favourite food! Whether it’s a takeaway you love, or that box of chocolates you never buy for yourself. This weekend, say yes!

5. Go on a shopping spree

Is there anything you’ve been eyeing up online? Treat yourself! It can be a Valentine’s Day present, from you, to you! You deserve it!

5. Have a virtual date

Maybe you’re missing a special somebody, or a whole bunch of people! Why not use Valentine’s Day as an excuse to get on a Zoom/FaceTime/Skype with them!

8 Sure Ways Hair Salons Can Generate Revenue During Lockdown

Your salon may be shut due to coronavirus but you can still earn revenue during this difficult time.

Read on to find out the 10 ways hair salons can generate revenue during lockdown.

ways hair salons can generate revenue in lockdown

1.Get Online

Your client base is currently online! What else is there to do right? Take advantage of everybody sitting home staring at a screen all day!

Host a hair tutorial class! You may choose to charge for the class OR, you can do free classes, build up an audience and suggest that the next class requires certain products/tools that YOU sell! – Create a product package for a whole series of tutorials you are planing to do!

You’ll be surprised how quickly word will spread and how popular your tutorials can become! Heck, maybe you’ll end up being a famous hair guru and you’ll ditch the salon for the online life!

If you’re not sold on the influencer way of life then carry on reading our ways hair salons can generate revenue during lockdown…

2.  Create Pamper Packs

Online searches for ‘self-care’ have risen 250% since the start of lockdown! Guess what people want? Hair and beauty products to help them relax and pamper theirselves!

You’ll already have an advantage over those who have started selling these online as you have a customer base! Make up a few packages, take some nice photos, get them online! You can also text/email you customer base and promote these packs!

If you want to give your clients a real treat, try adding some extras they may need at this time. Think camomile tea bags for relaxation, a few cheeky chocolates, maybe a candle for a relaxing bath? The possibilities are endless, you’ll know what your particular clientele will appreciate.

Top Tip: Include a hand written note to show them how much you care and are thinking of them at this time!

3. Create A Special Deal

Everybody is in need of some major salon time! Your clients will be missing you like crazy, so create a welcome back deal!

Combine treatments or offer extras for a set price and offer this only to those who are willing to book in now and pre-pay. Some may be sceptical due to the uncertainty of salons reopening-  throw in a guarantee that the voucher will not expire and the deal will be valid until you are once again open. Who would miss such a great deal?

Top Tips:

  • Offer this to your VIP’s first to gauge response, you don’t want to be overwhelmed with bookings you will struggle to fulfil later on!
  • Make this offer scarce to entice bookings! Only offer to the first 50 people that book, or add a time frame e.g. 24 hours only.

4. Reach Out To VIP’s

Another way hair salons can generate revenue during lockdown is to focus on current clientele before starting to dream of a thousand of new online clients! Your value comes from the clients you have, so build and strengthen your relationships!

Make sure you are keeping in touch, updating them on all necessary info, and letting them know that you are still there for them despite being closed.

Offer them the VIP treatment! Ask if they would like 1 on 1 virtual classes to perfect a hair technique/style. I would personally LOVE to have a hairdresser teach me how to blow-dry my hair at home to some kind of hairdressing standard!

You could guide them through a simple root touch up if they really cannot wait until your return. This could save some serious colour corrections in the long run!

You can even just give advice! There are thousands of people online with hair concerns that you will have answers for! Use your knowledge, share it!

5. Help With Home-care

Create a weekly newsletter addressing all the ways your clients could need home care.

For example, you’ll have plenty of blondes that are turning brassy by now! Create a newsletter about maintaining blonde at home (until they can make it into the salon). If you need help getting started, read our blonde blog. Mention the products that you have available to help with each concern! Watch your retail sales soar!

6. Talk To Your Suppliers

Product suppliers are sure to be busy creating online content! You can use this content to boost your pages engagement and following! You can also collaborate with your suppliers and see if you can do guest pieces, or be affiliated with a giveaway on their page! Being linked directly to brands can help your online sales seriously take off!

7. Get Social

If you’re reading this blog, chances are you’re already taking your business online!

Why not invest some time into levelling up your social media skills! We all know that a big following online means more interest in your physical salon! So prepare yourself for your reopening! Work on making interesting, sharable content that your following will find entertaining or educational! An engaged following will translate into a loyal following; this lovely lot will become valued VIP’s!

8. Launch A Subscription Box

Just like a pamper pack, but guaranteed rolling orders!

They’re everywhere right now! So get involved!

Entice your current clients with a super deal on their first month and include great products that you know they’ll love; personalise each box to match their needs!

Offer a free mini consultation with an expert! No online order will have this level of customer care!

Clients will be so thrilled that you took the time to understand their hair concerns that they’ll come back time and time again!

Hopefully you’ll be incorporating these ways hair salons can generate revenue during lockdown into your lockdown business plans!

how to prevent brassy hair Hairco and beauty

How to Prevent Brassy Hair: Tips for beautiful Blonde hair

There’s nothing worse than watching your creamy, cool blonde turn an unflattering yellow! But, why does this happen, and what can you do about it? We’ll answer all of your questions and make sure you know how to prevent brassy hair in the future!

What is Brassy Hair?

If you’ve ever lightened your hair, you’ve probably experienced brassiness! It’s a common concern for blonde hair, but that’s not to say brunettes don’t experience brassiness too. Brassy tones occur when lightened hair starts to develop yellow or orange tones. We’ll be exploring how to avoid brassiness and keep your beautiful cool tones for longer!

Why Does Hair Turn Brassy?

So, why the hell does this happen I hear you ask!  Well, there are many reasons for brassiness!

1. Your natural hair has brassy undertones

Unless you’re blessed with natural, milky white blonde hair or you carry the ashiest of ash tones, there’s a big chance you’ll have to put some effort into the brassy battle! Sadly, it’s just life! Warm undertones will fight against bleach and toner so you’ll need a solid plan to keep your cool!

2. Chlorine and Sun

Although sunbathing and taking a dip in the pool sounds like pure bliss, it will be causing your hair some brassy stress!

3. Box Dyes and home lighteners

Do you know what’s inside the dox dye and home lightner??? NOR DO WE! The list of chemicals and crazy ingredients is too much for us to handle! That’s why we stay well away! The best products = the best results! Always use professional colour!

4. Mineral deposits

Who knew our beloved shower could be to blame for brassiness? Some areas have particularly hard water, meaning it has a high concentration of minerals. Hard water can wreak havoc on your beaming blonde, turning it bitter and brassy.

5. Sulfates in your products

Shampoos that rely on sulfates to cleanse your hair are essential just stripping your locks of any natural oils! This will leave your hair extremely rough and dry! Think scarecrow! When your hair is in this condition, brassiness is almost guaranteed!

How to prevent brassy hair?

Dry hair immediately

Leaving your hair to air dry is best right? Wrong! When your hair is left wet, the more the purple/blue molecule (the counteracting colour of yellow/orange) will be lost from the hair. Instead, dry your hair as soon as you get out of the shower. Of course, always use a heat protection spray! Alternatively, you can wrap your hair every so often if you are reducing heat styling.

Our top picks for heat protection:

  • INSIGHT PROFESSIONAL heat protection shield 150ml
  • Schwarzkopf Osis Flatliner Spray 200ml

Choose natural

Find sulphate free products! Remember we mentioned scarecrows, you don’t want that, nobody does! Sulphates and chemicals are used to make your products super foamy, this is what strips away your natural oils. There are plenty of sulphate-free products out there that double up as colour protection! We’re baffled as to why sulphate stuffed shampoo still exists! If only everybody knew the damage it causes! Spread the word HairCo huns!

Try out these natural shampoos and you’ll see a difference!!

Choose the Best Blonde for You

Are you a level 5 and want work straight towards a  10? You’re asking for disaster! In theory you shouldn’t lighten your hair more than two shades from your natural colour, but of course we all like to push boundaries. But, don’t say we didn’t warn you!

Instead of an all over colour in a single session, you’ll need to gradually guide your hair lighter! Highlights are your friend! You have less chance of brassiness with multiple salon visits and gradually straying from your own natural shade. Talk to your colourist, they can best advise!

Turn down the heat

We all love a steamy shower,  but NEWS FLASH, hot water is bad for your hair (and your skin while we’re handing out advice)! So, another tip on how to prevent brassy hair is to use cooler temperatures to help preserve your colour; that means keeping away brassiness!

Has your hair dresser ever asked you if you wanted a cold rinse at the end of your shampoo and you’ve looked at them in horror wondering why they’re offering such torture? Well, they’re trying to close your cuticle cells and lock in moisture! You should just say yes next time,  and always incorporate this step at home. Closed cuticles look shinier, healthier and stronger!

Protect from Chlorine

It can be tempting to arrive on holiday and want to jump straight into the pool! But that chlorine will strip your hair faster than you can think of a pool side cocktail! So, how to prevent brassy hair on holiday? Read on…

Have you noticed there’s always a shower near a pool? There’s good reason, you should ALWAYS shower pre-pool! This non-chemical water will act as a protection barrier. You hair will soak up the chlorine-free water and therefore not be able to soak up further chemically damaging, brassy hair turning pool water. When exiting the pool, rinse again in the chlorine-free shower.

Use purple shampoo

There are plenty of shampoos out there specifically made to counteract brassiness! Most are purple or blue in colour as these are opposites of yellow and orange on the colour wheel and therefore cancel out the brassy tones! Investing in a great purple shampoo is the easiest way to keep brass at bay!

Check out our top picks! They’re sulphate-free too!

How to Stay Safe and Healthy During Lockdown

Once again our industry has come to a halt due to another national lockdown, and although this news came as a blow, it is vital we stay safe and healthy at this time.

Like everybody in the UK, you may be feeling scared, stressed, fed up or even a little angry at the thought of having to stay home and isolate from your family and friends.

We’ve outlined some helpful tips to stay safe and well over the next few weeks.

Stay home

Stating the obvious. Of course we all know that the best thing we can all do is stay home to help stop the spread of infection and to protect ourselves from becoming ill. If you’d like to read deeper into when you should and should not be leaving your home, there is lots of information here

Stay Informed

It can be easy to shut ourselves off and avoid depressing news and updates of Covid-19. However, there are many important updates that we all must be aware of. Even if you choose not to tune into the daily updates, stay in touch with a friend or check social media (reliable sources only) for important headlines such as new symptoms to look out for!

Sanitise

As you will have seen everywhere in the media, washing your hands is hugely important; wash regularly for 20 seconds in order to stay safe and healthy!

Along with frequent hand washing, we must keep up with sanitising our hands! We aren’t always able to be by a sink, but we are always capable of carrying a little bottle of santisier with us wherever we go!

On average, we touch our faces 20-30 times per hour! Between each touch, we are touching our phones, laptops, door handles and many more objects, all of which can be harbouring germs and bacterias. Sanitising frequently is a must to reduce the risk of transferring any virus causing nasties to yourself or to others!

Hand sanitiser various sizes

See the vast range available to help protect you and your loved ones.

Stay safe and healthy, sanitise!

Wear a mask

If and when you do need to leave your home, don’t forget your mask!

stay safe and healthy

  • Masks reduce viral transmission (if worn correctly) – over your nose AND mouth!
  • They prevent asymptomatic spread (pre symptom)

Stay safe and healthy, wear a mask!

Look after your mental health

Some of the main reasons for deteriorating mental health include change, uncertainty and loneliness. No wonder why we’re all feeling a bit down!

There are several benefits associated with positive mental wellbeing, including:

  •       Reduced stress and anxiety
  •       Improved moods and clearer thinking
  •       A greater sense of calm and increased self-esteem
  •       Improved relationships

There are many ways you can support positive mental health, lots of which will be personal to you, however the following points will contribute greatly.

Know your own mental health needs

Mental health can be a difficult subject, many people may not understand their true feelings, nor be able to express them.  But, this exploration and understanding is important when dealing and managing mental health and stress. We’re here to help you understand with some questions:

  • Are you more irritable lately? Perhaps in situations you wouldn’t have been before.
  • Are you less tolerant of those around you?
  • Are you still engaging in activities that you enjoy?
  • How is your concentration?
  • Are you feeling overwhelmed?
  • Are you worrying about your future? Which part?
  • Are you taking time for yourself?
  • Has your sleep changed? more/less
  • Are you following a routine?
  • Are your eating habits the same as usual?

If you are noticing changes to your normal behaviour, this is a sign you may be struggling. We are living in strange times, our routines have been thrown out the window, it is perfectly normal to respond to these changes with stress and anxiety.  But, when we understand and process how we feel about this change we are 1 step closer to improved mental wellbeing.

Let’s take back control! When we feel in control of our lives we feel better about our mental state! So, dig into your mind, how are you feeling right now? What is causing your stress/anxiety? Writing these thoughts down can help you feel like you are controlling your emotions, seeing them objectively and then therefore being able to respond with clarity and control. You may find it helpful to share these thoughts with a trusted friend or family member for another view. Often, our worries are made bigger in our own minds.

There are many other useful resources for dealing with mental health during COVID-19 on the GOV website , on MIND, and the NHS.

Practice mindfulness

No matter what is happening around us, the stress we’re experiencing, where we are in the world, mindfulness can help to ground us and make us fully present in the moment.

Practising mindfulness helps to reduce stress and anxiety, improve memory, and helps with concentration. When incorporating the method long term there is significant benefit to how improvement in emotional health, relationships and communication.

Stay connected

It is important to be in touch with family and friends in such difficult times! With the vast technology we have accessible, we have no excuse, and it’s never been easier!

Not seeing our loved ones face to face can impact our mental health! But, keeping in touch and communicating with them regularly can help! Of course it is not the same as giving our best friend a huge hug, but a little communication can be a huge mental boost.

We all have our own way of cheering up our loved ones online! Try our some new platforms! Maybe even get dancing on TikTok and connect with people around the world!

Eat a healthy diet

We all learned from Lockdown 1.0! Comfort eating and midweek wine did nothing for our mental or physical wellbeing! If you’ve not learned just yet, its a great time to start! It’s the new year after all!

The benefits of a healthy diet are endless! If you need some help find info HERE.

Keep moving!

Physical health is just as important as mental health at a time like this. In fact, working on your physical health can boost your mental health!

Gyms may be closed  but that is no excuse! There are plenty of ways to keep you body moving!

  • Go for a bike ride
  • Join a virtual fitness class (TV, Instagram, YouTube etc)
  • Go for a walk (close by)
  • Order some home weights
  • Get cleaning (heavy cleaning is a great workout)
  • Get some resistance bands (strengthens muscles & mobility)
  • Follow an online Yoga class
  • Start ‘couch to 5K’ if you want to start running

Challenge yourself

This point is very broad! It can be about fitness, self care/development, your job or anything you like! By having a goal and setting a challenge you set yourself a purpose! This is great for mental wellbeing!

Choose a realistic goal and begin your journey!

Get your beauty sleep

If you aren’t sleeping well, your whole body is suffering!

The lockdown disruption is causing us to slip into bad sleep habits!

We need to practice good sleep hygiene:

  • Stick to a sleep schedule – wake up at the same time EVERYDAY
  • Try not to nap in the day
  • Include wind down time in your day (30 minutes before bed)
  • Practice healthy living in the day (be active, get daily light exposure, reduce alcohol consumption, don’t smoke, don’t eat too late)
  • Avoid caffeine or alcohol late at night
  • Optimise bedtime (buy a quality comfortable mattress, buy cotton breathable sheets, set a cool temperature, use calming scents, ensure silence, block out light)

6 Incredible Black Friday Promotion Ideas for Your Salon (In Lockdown)

It’s lockdown, that means you can’t grow our business or make any sales as you’re in the service industry, right?…… WRONG!!! There are so many Black Friday promotion ideas you can be implementing in lockdown!!

1. Mystery Boxes

We all have outdated stock filling up our cupboards that we just can’t shift, despite it all being fab quality! So, why not dig it out and make use of it all?!

Create mystery Black Friday Goodie boxes in varying price ranges! Don’t let buyers know exactly what’s inside, just let them know how much the contents are worth.

Make sure the items inside the boxes are well worth their value! You don’t want unhappy customers, they’re expecting Black Friday bargains after all!

Try: £20 Mystery Box! Contents worth £45

2. Gift Cards / Vouchers

Gift cards are BIG business! They’re even bigger business this lockdown!

Why?..

We’re approaching Christmas at an alarming rate!

We all need something to look forward to!

Salons are going to be SUPER busy after lockdown & this is a great opportunity to promote exclusive opening hours/appointments for those who pre buy gift cards now rather than booking when salons reopen! (A top tip to help with current cash flow)

Make sure your gift cards are Black Friday friendly AKA a great bargain!

Try: Buy a £50 gift card and you can book treatments worth £60. Or, receive an extra £25 Free, with every £100 voucher.

3. Create Exclusive Promos For Your Social Following!!

Your followers should always be getting exclusive promos, they keep your business alive outside of the salon!

So, this Black Friday, create some extra special deals that are only posted on your social channels (you will even find that you increase your following when word of mouth gets around that your best deals are on Instagram/Facebook!) Double result!

Try mini deals that create extra buzz and urgency! Check out our examples below for Instagram!

4. Create Lockdown Pamper Packages!!

We’re all down in the dumps and need some TLC! What better way to cheer up than a home pamper session! Think of all the issues your clients are facing and try to solve them in a single pack!

Try: A ‘de-stress’ pack containing a facemask, a scented candle, a hair mask, a calming tea bag and maybe a few cheeky chocolates! Use your imagination, you know your clients best and what they will appreciate! You never know, this could be the start of a new online side hustle!

**Side Note** Adding a personal note inside to wish your customers well in hard times is a great touch!

**Inspo** We love the INSIGHT gift boxes!

5. Add Luxurious Touches To Any Prepaid Appointment

Cash flow may be an issue right now, but you can use Black Friday to keep yourself going!

Offer luxury extras when clients book in and pay (or pay a deposit) over the Black Friday weekend.

Try: An indian head massage with every blow dry, or a hand massage with every manicure. We’d personally like to see salons offer complimentary fizz with each appointment! Again, you’ll know what will appeal to your clientele! Get creative!

You’re head is starting to explode with your own Black Friday promotion ideas by now, right?

6. Get Personal

Do you have some VIP clients that have been with you for years? Are you able to contact them? If so, it’s a great idea to give them a call, text or email and let them know how valued they are, and offer a completely personalised Black Friday deal!

If a particular client comes in religiously for acrylic nails, offer a free gel colour on the acrylic if they book in when you re-open. Chances are the client will love the finish and never want to go back to regular polish!

Find ways to treat your VIP’s, but also entice them to try new services and upgrade their current treatments. Whatever you do, do not sound salesy in these messages! You are rewarding them for being your best clients after all!

Final Note…

Don’t forget Cyber Monday!! Lots of people actually wait for Monday to spend.   Previous years have shown that some of the largest savings come from waiting! So, make sure you extend your offers to Monday, OR come up with some different Monday Promos!
