SKNHEAD is the first product range that can be used as a tattoo, beard, face and body moisturiser, and hair styler, all in one product. The concept for the range, currently consisting of seven products, was actually born back in 1999.

The founder, Adee Phelan, who has previously brought out electrical, styling, and female cosmetics and haircare brands, has wanted to bring out a luxury men’s skin and hair grooming range for many years. Realising the grooming market is totally saturated with products that all do exactly same things, he wanted to create a range of products with a very specific USP. After working in the professional and consumer markets for 20 years, he knew what products were already out there and wanted to better them it all.

Although he was asked time and time again to produce this kind of styling product, Adee knew he wanted his product to be luxurious and high-end. And after signing endorsements for the last two decades, he wanted to finally create the perfect product. One that appeals to the aspirational man on the street, the barber community and the high-end brand adopters.

Beginning in 2012, Adee worked on developing the product range, sampling several different products and ingredients each week, all with the aim of mastering the art of the SKNHEAD lead product, Game Changer. Something that can be used on short, medium or long hair, and is a face, body and beard moisturiser. When carrying out his research, chemists, skin care experts and hair care professionals all said that what he was trying to do couldn’t be done. A good moisturiser needs to evaporate from the skin within 7-8 seconds, and a good hair product needs to be heavy enough to have hold. But after years of endless samples and persistence, Adee cracked the precisely balanced formula in mid 2017.

Adee didn’t want the range to just be an amazing styling product. He realised men have changed. They’re into shine, conditioning, moisturising. The range’s coconut scent (extensive surveys found that coconut, other than being Adee’s favourite, was favoured by 90% of the people asked) is due to the extensive natural benefits of ingredients such as Cacao Seed Butter and ethically sourced Palm Oil, which is rich in Vitamin E, and known for anti-oxidant and anti-ageing properties when used on skin. Also helping to lightly moisturise hair and give it a healthy looking sheen, whilst helping to hold and define your style.

Instagram changes affecting your salon

Instagram changes affecting your salon!

Have your Instagram stats taken a sudden downward turn lately? Less engagement? Less reach? Less EVERYTHING?? Well, we know why! There are Instagram changes affecting your salon and you need to act!

Whats happening?

There has been a major announcement in the last 2 weeks… Instagram is no longer a photo sharing app!

You heard correctly, our beloved photos no longer matter to the Insta world! Instagram are now focusing on video… *cough* TIKTOK *cough.*

Experiments with algorithms have already started to take place and this is why your stats will be all over the place (unless you’re already heavily video based).

There’s no clear outline yet of the exact changes being made but we will keep you up to date!

What can salons do?

Stating the obvious, get your phone out and press record.. start making videos of your before and afters for Instagram!

It’s a great idea to ask your client’s to send in videos, boomerangs and all sorts for you to use on your page. You may need to get this idea rolling by offering incentives e.g.  a free conditioning treatment for all who participate.

A great way to show your salons character and personality is with staff clips, these can be little intros or even staff dancing around the salon (we’ve all seen the TIKTOKS and they’re FAB).

If you’re already on TIKTOK, recreate or save your videos and post to Instagram. It’s a better idea NOT to use videos with the TIKTOK logo on.

Try editing your videos on a separate video editing app rather than using TIKTOK to avoid Instagram content penalties. We’ve put together a list of easy to use video editing apps here.

Have you ever noticed that social accounts with huge followings and lots of engagement are helping others? Share some video tips other salons or your clients will find useful!

Are there any videos you find interesting or funny that you can respond to? Get creative, and get social!

Are there any clients that would love some time on your page talking about how great you all are?

If you’d like to chat about Instagram changes affecting your salon or any other social media queries get in touch today! We’re happy to help!

insight professional vegan hair brand

The Professional Vegan Hair Brand Everybody Is Talking About

You must have heard all the chat about the professional vegan hair brand that is currently taking the UK by storm right???

If by chance your live under a rock and haven’t heard of INSIGHT Professional, then you’ve come to the right place!

Insight is a line formulated in an Italian laboratory, with an aim to create synergy  between the ancient wisdom of phyto-extracts and phyto-oils, whilst choosing to produce ethically and work with organic ingredients. Nature is their source of inspiration.

INSIGHT Professional shampoos are formulated without SLS and SLES (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate and Sodium Laureth Sulfate), which are considered aggressive and potentially irritating surfactants. As a replacement, they chose to use a  gentle cleansing agent, SODIUM COCETH SULFATE, derived from Coconut. Using a skin friendly cleansing product  protects the health and balance of the scalp over time.

Petrolatum (Paraffinum liquidum) are refined petroleum derivates, have film-forming properties that prevent proper ventilation and oxygenation of skin and hair. INSIGHT Professional replace them with natural ingredients which are more dermo-compatible with the same properties, but with fewer unknowns to health. Skin and hair should be free to do the most natural possible thing, breathe.

Silicones are inorganic polymers derived from silicon, they are produced through processes of chemical synthesis. It’s true that they give immediate softness and shine to the hair, thanks to their film-forming effect, but over time they can damage the hair structure. They obstruct the scales of the cuticle, preventing active ingredients in products from penetrating the hair. INSIGHT work hard choosing natural ingredients that will heal and enhance hair health, therefore hair must be free of silicone film to benefit from any nutrition.

Parabens are a kinds of preservatives, subject of a controversy. Whether they are harmful or not, needed or not, scientific research has not yet ruled definitively. Waiting for an answer that could dissolve any doubts, INSIGHT decided to use a safer preservative system.

INSIGHT only use fragrances without allergens, to ensure all treatments are as gentle as possible, even on the most sensitive skin . All INSIGHT products are colourant free.

The active main ingredients in INSIGHT formulations are derived from organic agriculture, and from certified crops. A blend of oils and butter of natural origin work in synergy with these extracts, increasing the action of nuourishment of the hair. To choose organic principle actives means to protect your wellness, to protect workers who are part of the production, and to safeguard the planet.

how to keep your salon cool

How to keep your salon cool in summer: 8 TOP TIPS

We all know us brits love talking about the weather.. So let’s address this HEAT WAVEE!

It seems like summer has officially arrived, at least for a few more days before the rain is back, and like everywhere, salons are hotting up! As much as we love the heat, summer in a salon can be an uncomfortable place! Check out our top tips on how to keep your salon cool below!

1.Cool it fast

Let’s talk Air Con! firstly, no you don’t need to invest thousands into a whole new system and knock down any walls! Check out portable air conditioning units; they’re relatively cheap, easy to place around the salon, and most importantly, your clients will love you for the gesture and added comfort (your staff will thank you too).

2. Keep on sippin’

Make sure you are hydrated throughout the day, and  of course offer your clients a drink too (COVID permitting). Drinking regular fluids (particularly water) on a hot day helps bodies maintain a lower core temperature.

Idea – Encourage client’s to take INSTA worthy photos- Create a complimentary, fruity cocktail menu (ensure the drinks look pretty spectacular).

Tip – When implementing tactics to encourage client photos, make sure you have your salon branded on mirrors and around the salon! You could also create a hashtag that you have displayed around the store for online use, or a message to ‘tag us’ in exchange for a social media page feature or a freebie (e.g. free conditioning treatment on their next visit).

3. Set the mood

Hear us out with this one…. Calming music can actually make you cooler! We know we love to pump out the tunes in the salon but this can make everybody hotter! Give some lower tempo tracks a go, they can still be current and in line with your clientele.

4. Breeze on through

If you don’t want to go down the air-con route, create a breeze through the salon. There is nothing nicer than a cool gust to offset the sweltering hairdryer heat that lives in salon air. BUT, only do this if you have a back door to create the cross-wind, simply opening the front door may actually make the salon hotter.

5. Glass is the enemy

As a salon, you’re more than likely to have an all glass front; to keep cool in summer, you must resist rolling up those blinds! Sunlight that enters through your window turns into heat, the heat is then trapped inside accumulating in the air. Blocking sunlight can prevent your salon from getting hot and uncomfortable.

6. Take it down a notch

Another way to keep your salon cool is to turn down temperature settings where possible. Set the backwash water a little cooler than you usually would, turn down heat tool temperatures where possible. Every little helps, as Tesco says!

7. Ice Ice baby

Soooo, we haven’t tried and tested this theory but we saw it online and thought we would share it just incase it works a treat! As well as creating icy blondes in your salon, create some little bowls of ice cubes around the salon and apparently the ice acts as a coolant. We’d love to know if this works, so if you give it a go, let us know! If it doesn’t work, you can use the extra ice for your fruity cocktails! WIN, WIN!

8. Who likes short shorts?

One for staff, RELAX any strict dress codes! Work with your staff to establish how they feel in the salon and adjust dress codes accordingly. Everybody in the salon should be comfortable and happy!

We hope our how to keep your salon cool in summer blog has been helpful, please let us know if you have any other tips can tricks to share with other salons!

ppe salon reopening

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and Salon Reopening

We finally have an end in sight for salons to reopen after Lockdown 3.0 (Woop-Woop)!

We have only a few weeks to go, and looking ahead to April 12th, we have put together a guide about PPE needed for salon reopening!

Undoubtedly, one of the biggest industry concerns surrounding salon re-opening is the safety of clients, staff and ourselves! But, providing your salon has the appropriate and necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) you can help to prevent the spread of Covid-19, we can all feel safe, relaxed and begin to adjust back to normal life!

What is PPE?

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is equipment that will protect you from health and safety risks. It can include items such as gloves, eye protection, aprons etc. We are all well aware of face-masks by now and the laws surrounding them.

What PPE do I need?

Hairdressers, barbers and beauty salons that are in close proximity with clients for extensive periods, (meaning it’s difficult to maintain social distancing measures) need to wear further protection in addition to the standard.

  • Wear a visor AND mask. You are advised to wear both a clear visor or goggles and a Type II face mask to keep clients safe. Your salon/(you, if you are a salon owner) should provide training on how to wear face masks safely.

The new BEIS guidelines recommend that our industry wear Type II face coverings  (a medical face mask made up of a protective 3-ply construction that prevents large particles from reaching the client or working surfaces) as well as a well-fitted clear visor that covers the forehead, extends below the chin and wraps around the side of the face.

It is also recommended you wear the following PPE:

  • Disposable gloves
  • Face masks
  • Goggles (visors as substitute)
  • Aprons

Continuing on from previous lockdown advice, reception areas should be fitted with a screen. These should also be used in nail bars to form protection for nail technicians and clients when giving manicures.

For up-to-date info, the guidance for people who provide close contact services should be referred to regularly.

Where can I buy PPE for the hair and beauty industry?

HairCo and Beauty stock a range of PPE including: face masks, gloves, visors, and disposable gowns etc. The demand for such stock is going to be larger than ever, so make sure you stock up early!

Should clients wear PPE?

Government guidelines state that clients must wear a face mask in hair, nail, beauty salons and barbers unless exempt.
